The 2nd Sabah Port Forum – A Recap of Event

The 2nd Sabah Port Forum was successfully concluded on 2 October 2019 after a two day deliberation on Sabah’s maritime and logistics potential. Attended by almost 600 participants, both local and international, the forum shone light on areas related to the State’s shipping connectivity, logistics and maritime investment opportunities, free - trade zones, cross border- trade as well as the regulatory aspects of trade facilitation.

The Forum’s Keynote address was delivered by YB Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Minister of Health and People's Wellbeing, Sabah who represented The Honourable Chief Minister of Sabah, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Mohd. Shafie Bin Hj. Apdal while YB Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Deputy Minister of Transport presented the Opening Speech.

As part of the ceremony, YB Datuk Kamarudin presented Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd with a Green Port Certificate for Sapangar Bay Container Port’s achievement in emerging as Winner for the Green Port Award System (GPAS) for 2019. An internationally recognised award, the GPAS is developed by APEC Port Services Network as a green evaluation system that recognises port operators and administrations for their contributions towards sustainable port development. Receiving the honour on behalf of Sapangar Bay Container Port was YBhg. Tan Sri Ibrahim Menudin, Chairman of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd. After the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, the VIPs were invited to tour the booth area which had included exhibitors from DP World, MTT shipping, Warisan Harta Sabah, POIC among others.

A total of twenty one speakers had presented at the Forum session which included panellist from prominent institutions such the Sabah Economic Development & Investment Authority (YBhg. Datuk Dr. Mohd Yaakub Bin Hj Johari, J.P.) , CMA CGM Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Mr. John Lim), Petronas LNG (En. Mohd. Hanafi Jamal), Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Mr. Nicholas Yong) and DP World (Mr. Andrew Hoad & Mr. William Khoury).

At the Closing, Pn Siti Noraishah Azizan, Organising Chairperson /Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd’s General Manager – Corporate Services, ended by reflecting on the two- day affair and hoped the forum provided assurance to investors that Sabah is a viable investment destination and is capable of achieving greater things. She further stated the need for all agencies to work together towards making Sabah a well-developed and prosperous State.

The 2nd Sabah Port Forum thereafter continued with a Maritime Career Talk which was officiated by YBhg Datuk Karim Bin Hj Bujang, Chairman of Sabah Ports Authority. Close to 300 students across Kota Kinabalu attended to hear from Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, Shell Timur, KASI (Malaysia) as well as Akademi Laut Malaysia, Netherlands Institute of Maritime and Universiti Kuala Lumpur.
